Coonamble is a town of about 3500 people on the Castlereagh River 570 km north west of Sydney and 2 hours drive north of Dubbo. 

Coonamble has a rodeo every Queens Birthday weekend in June. 

There are two Medical Centres in Coonamble, the Castlereagh Medical Centre and the Coonamble Aboriginal Medical Service.

The Coonamble Hospital has a general on call roster shared by three doctors. There is no procedural on call and the average number of acute presentations to the the on call doctor average 4 to 6 per day. 

Coonamble qualifies for an annual Medicare Retention Grant of $15,000 after 3 years (defined as 12 active quarters).

There are two motels in town for locum accommodation.
