Town Information:

Barham has an approximate population of 1,200 and, if you include our twin town Koondrook over the Murray River it becomes about 2,000. The total shire has a population of about 3,500.

Beds at the Barham Hospital include 8 acute and 1 accident and emergency.


The nearest major referral hospital is Bendigo (1hr 45mins) which will send up a retrieval team if required. Swan Hill Hospital is about 1 hour north, and Echuca Hospital is about 1 hour south – both have orthopaedic and general surgeons on call.

Radiology services are at all the above hospitals, also Barham provides x-ray services one morning a week. Both Kerang Hospital (20mins) and Cohuna Hospital (20mins) have x-ray and ultra-sound services.

Specialists are available at Shepparton, Bendigo, Echuca and Swan Hill. Shepparton and Bendigo (1hr 45mins) both have MRI, CT and their own pathology services. Pathology at St John of God (through Kerang Hospital with a twice daily courier service) and Dorevitch Pathology based in Bendigo, with a once a day courier service.
