AGPAL and QIP Excellence Awards Ochre QLD

With so many exceptional medical centres dotted around Australia, it takes an overwhelming effort to make your establishment stand out from the crowd. This is why we at Ochre Health are exceptionally proud to announce that one of our medical centres, Ochre Medical Centre Sunshine Coast, was the recipient of the AGPAL Highly Commended Award at the AGPAL and QIP Excellence Awards on Thursday 25 May, 2016 which took place at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.

The AGPAL awards span nine different categories, spread across a range of medical fields. The AGPAL website states that each category was chosen to reflect outstanding quality in practices, services and organisations, especially those that go the extra mile for their patients and are constantly striving to improve. Additionally, they’ll likely have teams that are always trying to innovate, and, ultimately, are dedicated to customer care – something that we at Ochre Health are fully focused on.

Innovation station

With so many cutting-edge innovations put forward in the medical industry, to have been nominated for the Innovation Award is a huge accomplishment in itself. So, just how did Ochre Medical Centre Sunshine Coast manage to beat off such fierce competition to land itself a nomination?

Sunshine Coast patients are offered the opportunity by the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service of having clinically appropriate fractures managed in primary care either with the GP of their choice or at Ochre Medical Centre Sunshine Coast with its easy access, parking, on-site X-Ray, CT and plaster nurses.

“We were nominated for the work that we are doing in the fracture clinic. Basically, the fracture clinic (which is run two days per week) is an extension of the Nambour General Hospital (NGH) fracture clinic, and patients who choose to be managed at Ochre Medical Centre Sunshine Coast are referred to us” explains Area Manager Kerron Bromfield.

 A fractious issue

Let’s take a closer look at just what our fracture clinic department does.

Fractures can occur at any time, in any place. Whether taking a tumble during a heated game of soccer, or tripping after misplacing your feet, heavy impacts and awkward falling can cause fractures of all shapes and sizes. The 10 – 19 year old age group is the most represented in our clinic. Having an organised fracture clinic also allows us to manage patients with fractures who use our walk-in and after-hours service as well as fractures that occur at Work. Another big cause of bone fractures is osteoporosis. This condition causes the bones to become brittle and thus, more prone to damage. According to Osteoporosis Australia, some 4.4 million Aussies over the age of 50 either live with the condition or have poor bone health, and 144,000 fractures recorded in 2013 were attributed to the illness. The same source states that one fracture occurs every 3.6 minutes in Australia, and that time-frame is set to fall to 2.9 minutes by 2022.

Fractures can occur for all manner of reasons – and Ochre’s Sunshine Coast Medical Centre is lending a helping hand to ease the pressure on the public hospital with its Fracture Clinic.
