Introducing Ochre’s Fifth Intern – Dr Olivia Chung

Olivia Chung

Graduating from the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Medicine in 2017, Olivia is excited that her career in medicine is finally about to begin.

While studying medicine, Olivia completed the majority of her general practice placements at the Royal Hobart Hospital. Originally from Hobart, Olivia is looking forward to moving beyond working in larger metropolitan centres to smaller, rural communities. Based at the Huon Valley Health Centre for the duration of her 13-week internship, Olivia is passionate about expanding and developing her skill set in a rural setting, where she anticipates she can contribute to the health of the Huon Valley community in another way.

“I feel very lucky to be part of a program that provides me with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a rural general practice.

I was fortunate enough to complete a five-week placement in Huon Valley last year, which gave me a fantastic understanding of how general practice works. I enjoyed my time at the Huon Valley Health Centre so much it completely converted me to general practice – it wasn’t a career pathway that I had seriously considered before.”

As well as general practice, Olivia is interested in mental health and public health. Due to a general lack of understanding of the importance of both mental and public health within the community, she believes there are valuable research opportunities available in both these areas.

“Throughout my various placements, I also realised that general practice is best suited to both those avenues – mental and public health – if I eventually want to do clinical practice.”
