New Doctor at Eumundi – Dr Katie Gardner

Queensland native, Dr. Katie Gardner has followed an interesting and challenging career path and is thrilled that this path has now lead her back to her roots. Katie has joined the team at Ochre Health Medical Centre, Eumundi, as a General Practitioner Registrar, with a special interest in paediatrics, public health, antenatal care and chronic disease management.

Situated just north of Noosa, Ochre Health Eumundi provides comprehensive health care services to town locals, as well as residents in the surrounding hinterland.  Rural Australian communities have long had a special place in Katie’s heart, and she is looking forward not only to her ten-minute drive to work, along quiet country roads but the chance to again become ‘one of the locals’. Originally from Hervey Bay, the Sunshine Coast area is not only familiar to her; it’s home.

Initially, a love of mathematics prompted Dr Gardner to study economics at university in Brisbane. Although Katie soon realised this was not to be her vocation, she gained a Bachelor of Business with Distinction, before turning her head and heart towards medicine. Relocating to a new city and university, Katie began medical studies at the Australian National University in Canberra, acquiring a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 2008. She spent her first three years after graduating at Mater Health Services and Mater Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, where she first began working in paediatrics. Paediatrics is a long-held area of interest for Katie, one that led her in 2012 to take up a year-long New Zealand stint working in hospital general paediatrics and neonatal intensive care.

In stark contrast to the intensity of neonatal and paediatric hospital environments, Katie has also experienced working more autonomously as general medical officer in several Australian detention centres, including those in Brisbane, Darwin and Christmas Island. Over the course of two years, mostly in a fly in/fly out capacity, Katie dealt with a wide variety of health concerns from refugee health screening, infectious disease management as well as acute and emergency presentations within a GP clinic setting. The responsibility of independent decision-making that can directly impact patients, while daunting at first, soon came to be highly valued by Katie.

General practitioner skills were further enhanced with GP, Paediatric and Emergency Medicine locum placements throughout NSW and Queensland. Gained through practical and sometime gritty experience, Katie brings understanding and a strong focus on patient-centred care to her new role as a general practitioner with Ochre Health. Her expertise in paediatrics will be a boon for young families in the community. And, while Katie has a strong affinity for working with teenagers and young adults, she also keenly anticipates building connection with older patients.

Dr. Katie Gardner is available for appointments between 8.30am – 4.30pm on Wednesdays and Fridays at Ochre Health Medical Centre, Eumundi.
