New Doctor at Sippy Downs – Dr John O’Connor

john O'Connor - Sippy Downs
It’s a long way to the Sunshine Coast if you start out from County Cork in Ireland, especially if you swing past Darwin on the way through. But, via that very route, Dr. John O’Connor arrives next week to begin his new role as a family GP at Ochre Health Medical Centre, Sippy Downs.

Dr. O’Connor’s relocation to Queensland from the Northern Territory is eagerly anticipated, especially as John’s wife is originally from the Sunshine Coast. They are expecting their first child later this year and are excited to be settling down near extended family. A dual Irish and Australian citizen, Dr O’Connor recently gained his Fellowship from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. This select qualification is backed by over seven years of Australian clinical experience. John has spent the last few years working in the Northern Territory, and since January 2016, as a full-time GP at the Palmerston GP Super Clinic.

With no hospital in the near vicinity, the 24-hour Palmerston clinic provided healthcare across a broad and multi-cultural demographic. Patients presented with a variety of chronic and acute conditions, which meant doctors were constantly challenged and exposed to incidents and ailments that would be unusual in other clinical settings. Despite the cultural divide, Dr O’Connor formed strong connections with indigenous Aborigine and Torres Strait Island patients and was deeply curious about their perspective regarding main-stream health care and medicine. This connection was cemented during his time on Groote Eylandt; island home of the Warnindhilyagwa people, situated in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Australia had long held allure for John, who knew that on gaining his medical degree from the University of Ireland travelling Down Under would be his next step. After years of study he yearned to see more of the world. As well as meeting an interesting cross-section of Australians, a variety of locum GP placements enabled the exploration of most of the east coast, from Melbourne to Port Douglas. Now he truly has the lay of the land, Dr O’Connor is looking forward to establishing himself on the Sunshine Coast.

Buderim and Sippy Downs are currently experiencing population growth and John is energised about being a part of the community at this time. He anticipates new patients will include young adults attending the University of the Sunshine Coast, young families including those new to the area as well as retired folk. He has a special interest in chronic disease management, emergency medicine, paediatrics, indigenous medicine and dermatology.

Dr. John O’Connor is available for appointments full-time at Ochre Medical Centre Sippy Downs.
