It’s a long road to becoming a General Practitioner, but Ochre Medical Centre Lancefield’s newest doctor has clocked up more miles than most.

Dr Ishani Wijegunawardena’s journey began in her native Sri Lanka; a gifted student from an academic family, she excelled in school, and was granted a scholarship to study at the People’s Friendship University of Moscow. She completed her medical degree, and after 7 years living in Moscow she moved to Malaysia to train and work as a General Practitioner.

After Malaysia, Ishani moved back to Sri Lanka and worked as a Medical Officer, working in the hospital system in a number of different disciplines. These included Gynaecology, Obstetrics, Surgery, Paediatrics, Pathology and Haematology. She also worked as a Medical Officer of Health for the Department of Health, primarily working on an educational pilot program within Family/Community Health.

Her experiences across these various specialities only built upon her GP skillset, and for her emphasised the importance of assessing conditions in a broader, more holistic context than hospital based care can often allow.

“I’m really passionate about being a generalist – I especially enjoy treating patients through a holistic approach.”

Ishani emigrated to Australia with her young family in 2011, moving directly into a General Practice job at Sunbury. She quickly found that she enjoyed the unique combination of rural and urban general practice that the region affords, located halfway between the cityscape of Melbourne and rural Victoria.

Upon completing her special approval placement at Sunbury, Ishani decided against locum work – and when a job came up at neighboring Lancefield, she jumped at it.

A short 25 minute drive from her home of Sunbury, Lancefield is already starting to feel familiar.

“We really love it, my husband is already talking about settling down in the area,” she laughed.

With over 12 years in clinical practice, Ishani’s passion for General Practice stems from her firm belief in establishing a strong relationship and rapport with her patients.

“I really enjoy General Practice for ongoing care of the patient, because you can review and follow them up beyond their recovery.”

Ishani is working full-time at Ochre Medical Centre Lancefield. To book an appointment, please call the practice on (03) 5429 1362, or visit www.ochrehealth.com.au to book online.
